We are a small group of professional merfolk who want to share information regarding mermaiding as a fun hobby, a great workout, a lucrative profession, and another form of cosplay to curious patrons of AnimeFest. For the past few years, the mermaid community has grown and flourished to include enthusiasts and professional entertainers from all over the globe. Some cosplayers, such as Autumn Raven and Victoria Hubner, are active members of the mermaid community. Mermaiding is another form of cosplay: we bind our legs in fabric or silicone and we swim with a monofin, or walk in “walkable” tail dresses to portray a character or “mer-sona”. For this panel, we will be focusing specifically on “swimming” mermaids. We want to present the following aspects of mermaiding: How to get started, safety, and information about the mermaid community and the professional mermaid industry. Furthermore, we want to be able to answer the patrons’ burning questions regarding our work.
