Since the visual novel's inception in Japan, increasing interest in foreign media has created a massive audience for localized games in the US. But what about something more homegrown? With access to newer tools and resources for indie game developers, a new generation of visual novels is on the rise that takes inspiration from but delightfully departs from its Japanese forebears.
